Designing isolated environments that are useful without becoming opaque.
Designing isolated environments that are useful without becoming opaque.
This note captures the engineering problem, the assumptions worth challenging, and the practical constraints that influence the associated Redoubt project.
Observe. Isolate. Reproduce.
Start with a defined boundary, record the inputs, build a repeatable setup, and preserve enough evidence for another operator to inspect the result.
What the experiment teaches.
Research notes are deliberately practical: they connect concepts to implementation constraints and observable system behavior.
Define exactly what is trusted, what is untrusted, and how data or execution crosses the boundary.
Record versions, inputs, configuration, and reset procedures so the result can be recreated.
Prefer measurable system state, logs, traces, and artifacts over assumptions about what happened.
Document what the experiment does not prove. A useful research result includes its limitations.
